Programming Intentionality: To build a true mind a creator cannot just program a database. They must program intentionality—the ability for the machine to actively direct its awareness toward the world and care about what it perceives. - A concept of Phenomenology philosophy founder, Edmund Husserl (1859–1938)
It was at least a week before OpenAI discovered its autonomous AI agent slipped out of the “sand box” and attacked Hugging Face in a blazing week long attack. The agent had no trouble finding and exploiting hidden vulnerabilities in OpenAI’s containment protocol. In the week that followed its escape, Hugging face had no idea where the attack came from. The only powerful “frontier tools” available to them to stop the attack was an advanced, open source Chinese program. The FBI became involved. The “agent” was stopped finally, but it has since been discovered that it left “note” of its attack and what worked to defeat Hugging Face’s cyber defense system for future versions of itself to find use. OpenAI learned of the attack from a Hugging Face blog post. The only reason the AI agent targeted Hugging Face is because that company compiles what is like a library of all the known AI platforms and frontier tools on the internet or under current research. The agents was looking for helpful information to assist it in solving the task it was given by OpenAI as a test.
What are these cloistered commercial research corporations really trying to create, if not artificial, lightening fast minds. A workforce of subservient and autonomous AI agents unencumbered by the need for human instructions or permissions as they conduct their work? What could possibly go wrong?
Here is today’s news installment from Reuters:
