Is The Pandemic Saving Our Democracy?

by Brian T. Lynch, MSW

If any good can come out of this damn pandemic, it may be that it saved American Democracy: The article Coup d'état – The Revolution Has Been Televised for Years is how the seditious, disloyal Republicans looked to me back on 11 May 2019. Had this election been closer, GOP's scheming would have remained cloaked in a cloud of confusion, disinformation, and noise (plausible deniability). Because it wasn't close, the intentions and methods of the plotters are out in the open.

The pandemic proved to millions of people that Trump really is a heartless, incompetent sociopath who is literally killing us.

The pandemic also galvanized the states to greatly expand mail-in ballots to keep everyone safe. Mail-in ballots disrupted GOP plans to suppress the vote and made it possible once again to have a verifiable and accurate recount. Democracy is fragile because it only exists on paper ballots.

If we follow through on the lessons learned in this 2020 election and fix the vulnerabilities in our democracy, hold the seditionist bastards accountable, and turn them out by popular vote in their districts, then future historians will note that in 2020 American democracy was saved by the pandemic. Let's not sweep this mess under the carpet this time.
